Positive Impact of Local BDS-Provider Training – the Case of PRUDEV II
The question
Can training of local BDS providers boost rural economies? “Yes” is the answer as emerging evidence is starting to show at the GiZ funded PRUDEV II project. The FRIENDS Consult Ltd (FCL) team presented to the PRUDEV II Implementing Partners the emerging impact of the capacity building programme delivered to 150 Business Development Service (BDS) providers across the Lango and Acholi sub regions of Northern Uganda.
The Project
The training was designed to strengthen the capacity of local BDS Providers to deliver relevant, effective, and market-responsive services to farmers, farmer organisations (FOs), and agri-MSMEs. Following the trainings, participating BDS Providers began applying the knowledge and skills gained to support farming households and communities in critical areas including access to finance, access to profitable markets, good agronomy, value addition, business management, and other essential services.
Impact
The impact of this intervention is increasingly being felt at multiple levels. Farmers, farmer organisations, and agri MSMEs are gaining improved access to technical and business support to enhance their productivity, competitiveness, and income-generation. Furthermore, the BDS providers are now strengthening their capacity to operate more effectively, identify and respond to client needs, and develop sustainable service offerings.
One of the most significant achievements has been the change in the mindset of participating BDS providers. The training encouraged a stronger client-centred and results oriented approach to service delivery, with greater emphasis on understanding the challenges faced by farmers and providing practical solutions that contribute to improved household incomes and livelihood.
Through this strengthened network of local BDS Providers, the PRUDEV II intervention is creating an important pathway for sustainable support to rural communities in the region. By building the capacity of service providers who live and work in these communities, the initiative is helping farmers and agricultural enterprises in accessing the knowledge, skills, and services they need to grow and thrive.
