Contracted by FSDU (as the funder, with BoU as the client) in April 2017, FRIENDS Consult Ltd conducted a market research for the use of the mobile phones as a platform for investing in Government securities. The study profoundly assessed the overall viability of a retail government securities market through the mobile phone platform; legal, political, regulatory and macro-economic environments as well as awareness about government securities, market structure, potential demand and supply for retail investors. Two benefits from the positive conclusion affords Uganda two advantages: i) inexpensive domestic borrowing ii) a chance for low income, modestly informed Ugandans to invest in risk free securities.
