Supporting Community-Empowering Business Model at RSTC

Supporting Community-Empowering Business Model at RSTC

What starts as a community economic support initiative can grow to scale and transition towards a sustainable commercial future. It is happening at the Rwenzori Sustainable Trade Centre (RSTC), driven by a CPA General Manager who came from a consulting background.

The Rationale

Many community-focused institutions face a critical challenge: transitioning from donor dependence to self-sustaining business models without losing their social mission. Balancing commercial growth with community empowerment requires rigorous strategy, good financial modelling, and operational alignment.

To build long-term resilience, RSTC is undertaking a major transition at its new Forever Home in Fort Portal City, Uganda.

The Challenge & Strategic Response

Community business hubs often struggle to monetize operations, build a viable network and expand market access. To overcome these structural barriers, FRIENDS Consult (FCL)was contracted to deliver a comprehensive 16-week consultancy. Working alongside RSTC’s Board, management, development partners, tourism operators, and local artisans, FCL is developing a robust Trade Centre Transition and Commercial Strategy.

Through deep business diagnostics, capacity audits, viability assessments and financial modelling, FCL is creating a practical roadmap to unlock new revenue streams and boost profitability. This includes expanding local tourism, retail, hospitality, and community enterprises at the new center.

Community Impact & Strategic Alignment

By strengthening the viability of commercial enterprises (MSMEs), the project directly benefits livelihoods for thousands of women artisans, farmers, and cooperatives across the Rwenzori region. Improved market access, stronger governance, and diversified income streams will boost household incomes and create sustainable local employment.

Furthermore, the initiative aligns with Uganda’s economic development priorities in the 10X Growth Strategy and NDP IV. In a micro way, it advances the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work), SDG 9 (Innovation), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption), and SDG 17 (Partnerships).

With data-driven strategy and targeted capacity building, social impact and financial sustainability can thrive together. Contact FRIENDS Consult Limited to explore how our advisory services can guide your institution’s growth.
