The World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Food and Water Security (GFCFWS) is working to address the challenges of food and water security. The world’s growing population and food waste are straining resources and making them expensive. Shifting dietary habits and inadequate water management are further exacerbating the problem. Decision-making necessitates but lacks adequate data.
To address the challenges of food and water security, the GFCFWS proposes several solution pathways. These include embracing innovative technologies, strengthening water-use regulation and ownership, promoting efficient water and food recycling strategies, facilitating open access to data and information, and harnessing data-driven analytical and predictive frameworks.
The GFCFWS proposes the development of a robust food/water data stack to empower stakeholders to make informed decisions. AI can enhance analytical and predictive capabilities, enabling stakeholders to manage resources more effectively and mitigate risks. AI can be used to predict crop yields, water demand and supply, and potential risks, allowing for better decision-making and resource management.
To achieve food and water security, a holistic approach is needed that includes innovative technologies, data-driven decision-making, and AI usage. Collaborative efforts can help build a resilient and sustainable future in this respect.
