Will Africa Harness the Economic Opportunity in its Youth Bulge?

Africa’s upcoming Gen A and Gen B could, if well harnessed, present a great opportunity for economic growth and development on the continent. With over 60% of Africa’s population under the age of 25, the youth bulge in Africa is a demographic phenomenon that has the potential to drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic prosperity. The African millennials and (more notably) Gen Zs are increasingly innovative and entrepreneurial.

The energy and creativity of Africa’s youth today are unparalleled, and their ability to adapt to the rapidly changing global landscape is impressive. As digital natives, they are well-equipped to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, such as artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, and digital communication. These are other digital tools like them can be effective accelerators of enterprise-led economic growth.

By harnessing the potential of Africa’s youth bulge, we can create a dynamic and inclusive economy that is poised for meaningful and sustainable growth. Investing in education, skills training, and entrepreneurship for young people will not only unlock their full potential but also drive job creation, enhance productivity, and stimulate economic diversification. Skilling needs to be matched with resourcing potential entrepreneurs with start-up capital and business incubation facilities.

Through supporting initiatives that empower Africa’s youth to become future leaders, innovators, and change-makers, we can ensure that they play a central role in shaping the continent’s economic trajectory. By making the world excited for Africa’s Gen A and Gen B, we can collectively contribute to a prosperous and thriving Africa that benefits all its citizens.

Should Africa fail to adequately harness this gem, our best brained youth will continue leaving the continent to find locus elsewhere – we would be exporting our development potential at a zero price!
